What is buffering?

Buffering is something that occurs when downloading a certain amount of data before playing a video. Why does my TV keep buffering? The most common form of buffering occurs when your internet speed is too slow to download the amount of data needed. In this scenario, your device will buffer the data for the video and then begin playing it when there is enough data downloaded to prevent lag in the stream. If the stream reaches the point where it no longer has enough data downloaded, it will pause the video, and thus you have to wait again while more data downloads. The buffering process can vary greatly based on how long the video is and the data contained within it. The buffering process may last just a few seconds for a shorter video, or several minutes for a longer video.


"Why does my TV keep buffering?"

You're using the wrong router.

Something to consider in regards to internet connection speed is the router you are using. Internet routers have different speed ratings, and in some cases the router you are using may not be equipped to provide you with the maximum speed possible. Your connection isn't strong enough.

Another problem you may have that is causing your video to buffer is the type of connection you are using. There are two ways to connect a device to the internet, a wired connection, or a wireless connection. A wired connection, which involves running an Ethernet cable from your router to your device, provides a more consistent connection and results in faster and more reliable streaming. If you are not able to use a wired connection, it is important to remember that a wireless connection can be interrupted by things such as: distance of the device from the router, walls or objects in between the device and the router, and separate signals that may interfere.  Place your router in a center, open space.  If your internet-use consists mostly in the areas surrounding the router, use the 5G for a stronger connection.  If the internet is used consistently all over the house, a 2G connection will have a farther reach. 

It's time to upgrade your Internet speed.

If buffering is something that you are experiencing regularly, it may be time to upgrade your internet speed. A slow connection speed will consistently hinder the rate at which audio and video information are downloaded. A fast speed, on the other hand, will allow you to stream very high quality videos almost instantly. If you are currently streaming video content regularly or are thinking about streaming video, SkyLine/SkyBest recommends that you have an internet speed of at least 300Mbps. However, if there are multiple people using the internet and/or streaming in your household, we recommend 600Mbps or more to accommodate everyone.
