How to tell if my connection is fiber optic or copper.

How to Check Fiber Connection

How do I know if I have Fiber-Optic Internet?

You can tell what kind of Internet connection you have based on the equipment in your home.

If you have an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) like this on the outside of your location, your connection is fiber-optic.

If you have a Network Interface Device (NID) box like one of these on the outside of your location, your connection is copper.

You can also run a speed test to see what kind of Internet connection you have. A copper connection will produce much lower speeds than a fiber connection. Additionally, you can call your Internet Service Provider for any questions regarding your service.

What is Copper Internet?

A copper-based Internet connection sends an electrical signal down a copper wire about two millimeters in diameter. These wires were initially used for phone service. Although they theoretically provide adequate Internet connection, these wires are cumbersome and are not build to carry Internet signal over a long distance.

What is Fiber-Optic Internet?

Fiber Internet uses hair-like fibers to send pulses of light. It is the fastest and most effective Internet connection available today, and it is much less bulky than copper wires.  Additionally, fiber is much stronger and is capable of sending a signal to a further distance without disruption.
