  • Frank James-SkyLine Scholarship Awarded to Grads in Local Communities

July 14, 2017

WEST JEFFERSON, N.C.— Ten area high school graduates have been awarded the Frank James-SkyLine Scholarship from SkyLine Membership Corporation.

Named in memory of Frank James, a longtime director and former President of SkyLine, the program benefits children of SkyLine/SkyBest customers who reside in the cooperative’s five-county service area.  Each year, SkyLine awards $1,000 scholarships, renewable for up to four years, to students pursuing a four-year college degree, and $500 scholarships, renewable for up to two years, to students pursuing a community/technical college degree or vocational program.

Alleghany County recipients are Savannah Cleary, daughter of Jerry and Barbara Cleary of Glade Valley, who will attend Coastal Carolina University to study marine science; and Rayni Pruitt, daughter of Scott and Michelle Pruitt of Crumpler, who will attend Surry Community College to study physical therapy.

Ashe County recipients are Jennifer Salazar-Sanchez, daughter of Rufino Salazar and Tomasa Sanchez of West Jefferson, who will attend Campbell University to pursue a degree in biochemistry; and Elizabeth Goodman, daughter of Billy Goodman and Julie Greene of West Jefferson, who will enroll in the college transfer program at Wilkes Community College.

Avery County recipients are Veronica Clark of Banner Elk, daughter of Kylie Clark, who will attend Virginia Tech to study biochemistry; and Katylin Estep of Elk Park, daughter of Micheal and Sherry Estep, who will attend Caldwell Community College to earn her Associates in Arts degree.

Watauga County recipients are Olivia Brooks, daughter of Jason and Laura Brooks of Vilas, who will attend East Tennessee State University to study dental hygiene; and Holly Greene, daughter of Byron and Nikki Greene of Vilas, who will attend Caldwell Community College to pursue a degree in nursing.

Johnson County recipients are Rebekah Dugger, daughter of Tracy and Julie Dugger of Shady Valley, who will attend the University of Tennessee to study animal science; and Taylor Long, daughter of Dr. Cheri and Travis Long of Shady Valley, who will enroll in the college transfer program at Northeast State Community College.

More than a half million dollars in scholarships have been awarded since 1987, and these students will receive their scholarship awards at SkyLine’s Annual Meeting in late September.
